Davis’s signing with Seattle probably means end of Kaepernick chase

The Seattle Seahawks announced the signing of quarterback Austin Davis today. The most interesting aspect of this signing will be how fans react to the new veteran backup in Seattle being Davis and not Colin Kaepernick. Davis visited the Seahawks the same day as Kaepernick on May 24th.

Davis is a six-year vet who has played with the Los Angeles Rams, Cleveland Browns and the Denver Broncos. He played with the Broncos in 2016 but saw no game action. With the Browns in 2015, Davis started two games and the Browns lost them both. This should come as no surprise, though, as any quarterback would have had a losing record in Cleveland.

Davis had his best season in 2014 when he was with the Rams. As a starter that season, Davis was 3-5 with a QBR of 85.1. He threw 12 touchdowns against nine interceptions. This season included Davis having his best professional game and this came against the Seahawks. Davis led the Rams to a 28-26 victory and completed 17 of 20 passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns.

End of the Seattle road for Kaepernick

Davis does not have the talent of Kaepernick, though. He does not do anything well and is simply average at best with arm strength and mobility. Davis does warrant a lesser paycheck than Kaepernick, however. Davis is a safe choice and may not even be Wilson’s backup. If Trevone Boykin is able to play after his parole hearing in Texas on July 14th, Boykin is the likely next-man-up should Wilson be injured.

Davis’s signing also means Kaepernick will probably sign elsewhere. The only question is if Wilson is injured and Boykin nor Davis do well in his absence, yet Kaepernick does well with whomever he signs with, will fans be upset that the former 49er did not sign in Seattle?

To make room for Davis, the Seahawks released Jake Heaps.
