Seahawks training camp update for Thursday, part one
By Lee Vowell
There are always items to discuss now that actual football is taking place. Here are some Seattle Seahawks nuggets for the early part of Thursday.
Malik McDowell
McDowell has been placed on the Non-Football Injury list. This means a few things. McDowell can return to action at any point, although that does not appear likely to happen anytime soon. Since McDowell has been placed on the NFI it means he is also eligible to be placed on the regular season NFI list. If this is done, McDowell would not have to be accounted for on the 53-man roster and could return after six weeks.
There is still no indication when or if McDowell returns from his ATV incident in 2017. Very few have seen him, so the extent of his injuries are still unknown. Also unknown is when the Seahawks will give more detail on McDowell’s injuries.
Jermaine Kearse
Kearse still is not getting a whole lot of reps in camp. This could mean that the Seahawks are simply more interested in what other players, especially rookie Amara Darboh, have to show. Kearse is a known commodity, though he had a not-great 2016 season.
On the flip-flop, that Kearse is getting limited reps compared to previous camps – thus far – could mean that the Seahawks have lost faith in his ability to make the offense better. Compared to what Seattle already knew they could get from Tyler Lockett, and how Paul Richardson played at the end of 2016, it makes sense to question what Kearse’s role will be in 2017. Plus, Doug Baldwin is on the team. He is pretty good.

Also, tight end Jimmy Graham is an option. A good one. So, Kearse could currently be the fifth option. Or he should be. Russell Wilson appears to have a lot of trust in Kearse, though. That may say more to coaches than what they see on the field.
