Seahawks really need to come through against the 49ers in second half
The Seahawks suffered through a tough performance last week. Can they beat their kid brother in San Francisco to take away the sting?
The Seahawks loss against Green Bay was tough. We’ve graded that game already, so I’ll only touch on it briefly. The man thing is nothing cures the ills of a loss like a win the very next week. And the Seahawks kid brother to the south is tailor-made for a win.
First, back to Green Bay. The Seahawks opening game at Lambeau Field was going to be tough. Everyone knew that. Everyone knew that containing Aaron Rodgers was a big assignment. I saw the key to beating Rodgers as a simple one. Keep him off the field. Not so simple to execute, as the Packers held the ball for 39 minutes. That’s what the Seahawks needed to do, and their offense was nowhere near up to the task. Absolutely, there were a couple of ridiculously bad calls. But as you’ll see in that same article, the game was truly lost because the offensive line couldn’t run block. No one but Chris Carson could run.
Eddie Lacy didn’t show a bit of improvement over his sub-par preseason, either. Given that, I wasn’t too surprised to see him taken off the active roster for the 49ers game. After all, Thomas Rawls is back. The coaches are talking about how he runs the ball with violence. They aren’t saying that about Lacy. While they said it was a hard call, that had to be easier than ordering steak instead of Saltines. I really hope Lacy gets into gear soon, but he’s making it hard to believe in Hulk Mode. He isn’t even in Christine Michael mode at this point.
So it’s halftime, and so far this game looks pretty bad. While the Seahawks have controlled the ball for two thirds of the game, they only have two Blair Walsh field goals to show for it. As Bob Condotta tweeted, it’s ugly:
38 yards rushing. I’m not sure how a team can hold the ball for 20 minutes in a half and manage just 38 yards on the ground. That has to be a record – and no, I’m not going to do the research.
Nor am I going to edit the beginning of this article. The San Francisco 49ers are the kid brother, and will continue to be the kid brother even if they do the unthinkable today. The 49ers do have a strong defensive line, but I expect them to wear down as the game progresses. Unless of course our offensive line wears down first. Hmmm…that would be a bad thing. That’s okay. I have faith in Chris Carson to break one, and I have faith in the miraculous Russell Wilson as well. We’ll see soon enough.
