Seahawks have more questions at left tackle with Odhiambo injury

This preseason the Seahawks lost their presumed starting left tackle, George Fant. Rees Odhiambo replaced him through week four. But Odhiambo might suffered an injury that may make him miss Sunday’s game. Who would take his place?

The logical choice as for the short term replacement for the Seahawks left tackle is Matt Tobin. Tobin was acquired during training camp after Fant was injured. Tobin himself does not have a lot of starting experience, but he might be a better fit than Seattle’s other option.

This is based, of course, on Odhiambo not being able to play. He suffered a chest injury in the third quarter against the Colts but kept playing. The problems came after the game when he sat in the locker room unable to catch his breath. Odhiambo was then transferred to a local hospital where he spent Sunday night.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll did confirm Monday that Odhiambo had bruised his sternum and not his heart. These injuries still hurt, though. Plus, playing through initial pain is sometimes easier than playing with pain later. There is a decent chance the left tackle will not play on Sunday versus the Los Angeles Rams.

Seattle has two options at left tackle should Odhiambo not play. One, of course, is Tobin. The other is moving left guard Luke Joeckel over to tackle. Taking Joeckel’s place could be Mark Glowinski. Glowinski was recently replaced by Oday Aboushi at right guard. At least Glowinski has experience at left guard. Joeckel has experience at left tackle in his career, but it is not good experience.

One could question, though, how much worse Odhiambo’s replacement would be? Pro Football Focus currently has Odhiambo rated the lowest of any tackle in the NFL. Surely, Tobin, or even Joeckel, couldn’t be worse, right? 12s might find out on Sunday against a good Rams defensive line.
