Defensive Line: (B+)

I liked seeing the pressure the defensive line put on Deshaun Watson. The group was able to drop the rookie five times, and hurried him on several other occasions.

Despite the five sacks, on some plays Watson had far too much time. Like Wilson, Watson is pretty elusive and keeps his eyes downfield when flushed from the pocket. That’s when contain becomes crucial. Unfortunately the Seahawks were unable to keep contain in several instances and they paid for it.

Linebackers: (C+)

I’ve given the linebackers pretty favorable grades so far this season, but Sunday wasn’t their best performance. Anytime the defense gives up over 500 yards of offense and 38 points, the guys in the middle of the defense are partially culpable.

The linebackers didn’t play a terrible game, but it certainly wasn’t up to their high standards. I expect them to be better going forward.

Defensive Backs: (C)

The defensive backs had a strange day. On one hand the secondary got absolutely torched by a rookie quarterback who effortlessly tossed four touchdowns. There were far too many big chunk plays throughout the game. DeAndre Hopkins and Will Fuller had a field day, combining for nearly 350 yards receiving. Not a great showing by the secondary.

On the other hand, the secondary came away with some huge plays that ultimately helped tilt the game in their favor. Earl Thomas had a beautiful 78 yard pick six and Richard Sherman had two interceptions of his own.

Had it not been for the turnovers, the secondary would certainly have been looking at a lower grade.

Special Teams: (B+)

It was another sound day for the special teams unit. Blair Walsh hit two chip shot field goals, Jon Ryan blasted five punts for 237 yards, and the coverage teams did a nice job of neutralizing Houston’s dangerous return men.

I’m hoping to see the return teams pop a big play in the coming weeks.

Go Hawks!
