Seahawks ask Eddie Lacy to be who they thought he was
By Lee Vowell
The Seahawks running game has not been good this year. Every year Seattle relies on Russell Wilson’s arm more. Seattle has named Eddie Lacy the starter this week. How good will he be?
Seahawks running backs are not good. But Eddie Lacy? This is your life. Seattle brought you in to be The Man this year. You lost weight and got in shape. But your statistics are terrible.
Partly this is not Lacy’s fault. Seattle’s offensive line pass blocks much better than it run blocks. Who would have thought this would happen? The Seahawks offensive line usually doesn’t do much well at all. However, if you look at the Houston Texans game on Sunday, Seattle’s running backs had no holes to run through. But Wilson had a clean pocket a lot of the time. Weird, right?
Now Seattle has a good left tackle in Duane Brown. Brown joins the Seahawks via trade this week. Ethan Pocic seems to get better each week at left guard. Justin Britt is solid at center. The right side still needs some work, though. But the line should be decent enough now for Seattle to run a little better. Possibly.
But do you know who leads Seattle in rushing? That would still be Chris Carson. He was the rookie who played three and a half games. Carson still has at least 100 more yards rushing than any other Seahawks back. Wilson is second on the team in yards rushing. Lacy is third. But Lacy only averages 2.6 yards-per-carry. This average is still better than Thomas Rawls (2.0) and C.J. Prosise (2.5). That is nearly unbelievable.
Prosise, of course, is never healthy. Rawls isn’t much better health-wise and has been ineffective when he does play. Rawls has had the most recent opportunities to start since Carson’s injury. He did not make the most of them.
Lacy is on a one-year deal. At this point he will not be getting another contract in Seattle. Not with Carson expected back in 2018. And not with how bad Lacy has been.
Of course, all this could change starting Sunday. One thought has been Lacy has not been given the ball enough to use his size to wear down a defense. The Washington Redskins are not great at stopping the run and have injury issues. If any week was going to be the game Seattle finally was effective running, it is Sunday.

12s can only hope that Lacy is the back we all hoped he would be when the Seahawks signed him this past offseason.
