Don’t blame Blair Walsh. The loss was a total Seahawks team effort

The Seahawks MVP gets a pair of horns too

What’s that you say? Russell Wilson, Mr. Fourth Quarter, gets a pair of goat horns? He was nearly perfect in the fourth quarter! In fact, he had a perfect passer rating for the fourth until the final drive.

Yes, he did. And he’s been nothing short of magic in the fourth quarter so far this year. The problem is, he wouldn’t have to be so amazing in the fourth if he was simply efficient in the first three quarters of every game. On Sunday Wilson made several bad passes, underthrowing receivers on deep routes, overthrowing on others, and on one occasion managing to make a 235 pound man appear out of thin air with the football in his hands. Unfortunately that man was wearing a Redskins jersey. Despite his fourth quarter heroics, just decent play in the first half would have meant a win here.

In the first half of all games so far, Wilson has thrown just four touchdowns versus three interceptions for a passer rating of 81.5. In the second half, he has 13 touchdowns and three picks for a passer rating of 109.7. In the fourth quarter he has 11 touchdowns, one interception and a passer rating of 132.9. Solution: tell Russell it’s the fourth quarter all the time.

The Seahawks coaching staff gets a pair to wear, too

The Seahawks came into the game leading the league in penalties with 66. If you think averaging almost 9.5 penalties a game is bad, you’re right. Good news, though 12s! Seattle no longer averages more than nine penalties a game. After Sunday’s game resulted in 16 flags, Seattle now averages 10.25 penalties per contest. At this rate, they’ll break the all-time record, held by (of course) the Oakland Raiders.

Why do I give this to the coaching staff, and not the guys making the mistakes on the field? Because the Seahawks coaches have tolerated it so far. You can read here how Pete Carroll is getting fed up with all the penalties. Yeah, I’d hope so. Yes, the Seahawks went to the Super Bowl while leading the NFL in penalties twice.

I’m Just saying, it’s pretty difficult to win a football game when you hand over 138 yards to the zebras. Now go ask Blair Walsh if he would have liked to have been closer to those goal posts for one of his kicks. He’s the easiest to blame, but there’s a lot to go around for this loss. That being said, I expect them to bounce back and win the next. Let’s just start the fourth quarter heroics in the second, huh?
