The Seahawks added a cornerback on Monday and he is a familiar face. Byron Maxwell re-signed in Seattle to play the rest of 2017. How will he fit in to this year’s team?

Seahawks need a cornerback. And they have a new-old one. Byron Maxwell has decided to come back to Seattle for at least the rest of 2017. According to ESPN’s Brady Henderson, Miami “remains on the hook for the rest of his $8.5 million salary.” This does not mean Maxwell will not make some money from Seattle, but how much remains unknown at this point.

Maxwell should be a natural fit in Seattle. Maxwell knows the system and knows how to play Seattle’s kick-step philosophy. Is he Richard Sherman? Of course not. But who is? Still, for a player of Maxwell’s ability and knowledge of Seattle system to be available is a very good thing.

The Dolphins let Maxwell go at the end of October, but this is Miami we are talking about. That franchise is clearly not the standard-bearer for rational and logical football over the last 20 years. Maxwell wasn’t horrible with Miami in 2016. He just hasn’t been worth the money that has been paid to him since he left Seattle in 2015.

I think the other important aspect is that Maxwell will be welcomed by Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor. The two potential Hall of Famers and original Legion of Boom members know Maxwell. They know what to expect. Plus, they will hold Maxwell accountable for the way he plays. This may have been lacking in the places Maxwell has played since he left the Seahawks.

Seattle’s secondary, if healthy, will now look like Bradley McDougald, Kam Chancellor, Earl Thomas, Shaquill Griffin, Jeremy Lane, Justin Coleman and Byron Maxwell for the most part. No Sherman, but still not a bad group.
