Seahawks will rise again and damn the pessimism
By Lee Vowell
The Seahawks are 6-4 and have made the playoffs the last five years. Maybe they will in 2017 too. But beyond this year, there is hope. Maybe even more…
Seahawks are done, right? The window has closed? Players are getting too old and core players will be out soon. Richard Sherman? He will never be the same. Kam Chancellor? He will never play again.
Russell Wilson still exists, though. And now he has – possibly unfortunately – proved that he can be the ENTIRE offense. But this might be a good thing. Why? Because Wilson will not have to continue to be, surely. And he is still young. He will be 29 years old on November 29th. Better than I can put, Brian Nemhauser tweeted
Brian is right. Wilson is the window.
But even better, Richard Sherman will be back in 2018. So will Chris Carson. Ethan Pocic will be a year older and better. Duane Brown will still be with Seattle.
And the Seahawks will be underdogs again. In 2018, most will predict the Los Angeles Rams to win the NFC West. Seattle is waning, correct? The Rams will be the cool and hot team. Seattle will be the old guard.
But there is no way that a Pete Carroll led team ever, and I mean ever, relegates itself to second best. Carroll is the coach who holds practices called Competition Friday. You know, the ones that are normally a day of rest. Can you see the Seahawks coach just being ok with accepting next-best? No. This isn’t changing. Seattle will always be a team that will contend as long as the coach is Pete Carroll.
Does he make mistakes? Yes. Does he put his team in contention to win every year? Yes. And who fits better as coach in the Pacific Northwest than Carroll? Do we 12s want Bill Belichick? No way. We want one of our own West Coasters. We want Carroll. And he has been a success.
I am not saying Carroll is a better coach than Bill the Brooder. But Carroll is ours and ours he shall stay.
Plus, the Seahawks talent is young enough to be good for several more seasons. And general manager John Schneider has proven himself to be shrewd enough to contend. Proof? He has won one Super Bowl and been to another. And the team he oversees has been to the playoffs every year since 2012. That’s proof.
So, haters…Take this year as you will. Seattle has suffered a multitude of injuries and yet still make the playoffs. Seattle will be better and hungrier in 2018. Beware a Seattle team with a chip on its shoulder.
