Are the Seahawks really becoming the Browns?

The Seahawks lost badly on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams. This means all we love about Seattle is dead, right? That is what some people might have you think anyway.

The Seahawks window is closed. Look forward to many seasons with one or two wins, 12s. Seattle has gone from making the playoffs for five straight years to bottom dwellers. No one will ever want to play in the Pacific Northwest. Earl Thomas will be traded away and Russell Wilson should be. And according to one Rams player, Seattle is no better than Cleveland.

These things have to be true, don’t they? I have heard them all this week. If I hear it or read it, then these statements must be true.

Forget for a second that Seattle has been destroyed by injuries this season defensively. Seattle has gotten too old to really compete anyway. Richard Sherman and Kam Chancellor? Washed up. Even if they had been healthy all season, Seattle would have won at most nine games.

Let’s get back to reality. Everything in sports becomes a knee-jerk and immediate reaction. If it happened a second ago, it is true forever. The Seahawks may not make the playoffs this season, but does that mean that will not in 2018 and beyond? No.

Bobby Wagner, Russell Wilson, Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor and Earl Thomas will all be 30 years old or younger in 2018. And you have to believe Seattle will not have the injuries next year that they have this season. It is easy to believe because what has happened this year health-wise has never happened before in Seattle. And all of the players I mentioned above are signed through 2018 at least.

You don’t think what has happened this year will be extra motivation next season for players like Sherman? Of course it will.

2018

I am not completely stupid. (Not completely…) The Seahawks need to make some necessary changes. Big changes. But there are several core players left to get Seattle back to the playoffs. Plus, some good young players will be better. Shaquill Griffin will be in his second season and he has had a good rookie year. Ethan Pocic has done some good things and will be a year stronger and wiser. Chris Carson and Mike Davis can spend the entire season, hopefully, in the backfield. And veteran Duane Brown will still be under contract.

This offseason will be crucial for the future of Seattle’s success beyond 2018. But next year, Seattle should still be good. And probably have the proverbial chips on their shoulders back. This team is a prideful bunch. My feeling is that in 2018 they prove to the rest of the NFL that the Seahawks are not dead and the Legion still lives.
