Pete Carroll held his NFL Combine press conference on Thursday and had a lot to say. As always, Carroll was mostly positive. Here are some subjects he spoke on, including a certain quarterback who needs to go opposite field more.

The first question Pete Carroll was asked about the Seahawks coaching changes on Thursday at the NFL combine was not about Darrell Bevell but about Tom Cable. Weird, right? Carroll makes changes to both the offensive and defensive coordinators this offseason and people want to ask about the offensive line coach.

This is a pretty clear sign that national people seem to think what was holding back Russell Wilson and company wasn’t Bevell or Kris Richard but the offensive line. The question asked was about facing Cable and the Oakland Raiders in London in 2018. Carroll answered, “Wow. Right to London.”

But you knew what Carroll meant was, “Wow. Right to the coaching changes.” And the media has every right to ask about the massive changes Seattle has made so far this offseason. Carroll said Cable was great but a change needed to be made. And it did. The last offensive lineman to develop under Cable at that player’s draft position was…

Yeah, you get it. The Seahawks needed a change.

(To see the entire press conference, here you go.)

Richard Sherman

Pete Carroll said that the great cornerback had “minor surgery” on his left Achilles but should be ready for training camp. Sherman just needed a “cleanup” and that nothing major was going on.

Carroll intimated that Sherman will be a Seahawk when 2018 started and will be needed.

Chris Carson

Carson, said Pete Carroll, was far better than expected as a rookie. This was not only as a running back but as a receiver and blocker. In fact, Carroll said Carson’s blocking was as good, if not better, than any rookie he had coached.

Carroll went on to say he was “excited” about Carson’s return from injury. Carson, according to Carroll, “…has a spot in our backfield and we’re looking forward to him making a big impact this season.”

Russell Wilson

Finally, Carroll did not offer much as to Wilson playing spring training baseball with the New York Yankees. Carroll did infer that Wilson needed to go opposite field more. (This drew laughs.)

Basically, Carroll was saying Wilson playing baseball was no big deal. And in fact, Wilson was just staying in shape and having fun. And really, after a stressful season for Seattle and Wilson, shouldn’t he be allowed a little fun?
