The Seahawks re-signed free agent running back Mike Davis to a one-year deal. Davis will be expected to take on the number two back role if Chris Carson can return healthy. Seattle fans should also be happy that Davis is coming back.

Besides Chris Carson, Mike Davis was the only other Seahawks running back worth a flip in 2017. And Davis started on the practice squad for the first nine weeks of the year. I am not a coach, but if I saw Eddie Lacy and Thomas Rawls’ struggling so much so early and then watched the way Davis played when coming off the practice squad…Well, I might feel guilty that I had made a poor decision in putting him there in the first place.

In 2018, Davis will most definitely be on the active roster week one (unless he gets injured in preseason, of course). Carson will start and Davis will back him up. That being said, the Seahawks already start off with a better tandem at running back than in 2017. Sure, Carson played in week one of last year, but he got just six carries. Seattle coaches should have a better idea of what they have in 2018.

Of course, Seattle could choose a running back with their first pick in the 2018 NFL draft, but they shouldn’t. Seattle has greater needs elsewhere, especially if Carson and Davis can stay healthy this coming year.

Terms on the one-year agreement have not been released yet. But if Davis and Carson prove to be a formidable duo, Davis should get a longer-term deal from Seattle before 2019. By that time he will have earned it even more.
