Seahawks say goodbye to Trevone Boykin. Could they really take a look at…?

The Seahawks released former backup quarterback Trevone Boykin today. Could they be looking at a big name for Russell Wilson’s backup?

Trevone Boykin was cut by the Seahawks today. Boykin’s girlfriend, Shabrika Bailey, filed a claim of domestic abuse against him last week with Dallas police. The news broke on Dallas TV station WFAA-TV Tuesday morning. Two hours later, the Seahawks cut ties with him.

This is Boykin’s third arrest, for those keeping score at home. To be fair to Boykin, one previous arrest was for possession and public intoxication, and was dismissed. He was also charged with resisting arrest while at TCU. He plead guilty, paid $1500 and served one year probation. So he isn’t exactly a hardened criminal.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network tweeted this statement from Boykin:

As for Boykin’s guilt, we’ll see. We certainly hope that justice is served, but the main point of this article is what the Seahawks will do next. If anything can be said to be “funny” about this story, in these sense of ironic or odd, it’s that Boykin wasn’t Wilson’s backup last season. That role was earned by Austin Davis, a gentleman who is still a free agent.

So will the Seahawks rush to re-sign Davis? Consider he was in for just five snaps over three games and never attempted a pass. Does that mean the Seahawks didn’t trust him? Or could it mean they really have no way to evaluate how he pays under the pressure of a real game? Actually, they do, which is one of the reasons he got the job instead of Boykin last year. Davis beat the Seahawks back in 2014 in one of his eight starts for the Rams that season. There was that game, plus the fact Boykin looked terrible in the last two preseason games for 2017.

Colin Kaepernick will not be with the Seahawks

Will the Seahawks bring Davis back, or reach out to a big name player?

You know who I’m talking about. I didn’t even mention him in the lead, because there’s this one cranky guy who accuses me of writing nothing but clickbait. I mean, the world is basically clickbait at this point, right? You do know 60 Minutes got their highest rating in ten years this past Sunday. Entire political campaigns are based on clickbait now.

But I chose to rise above it. I buried Colin Kaepernick’s name below the fold, as it were. (You have to have read a physical newspaper for that to make sense). The main reason I didn’t mention Kap until now is because I can’t imagine the Seahawks will contact him. Nothing has changed from last year, when the Seahawks brought him in for a look. Pete Carroll said Kaepernick was a starter, not a backup, and that was that. Well, nothing has changed, other than NFL teams are hiring guys who fell backwards out of the end zone, and stiffs who haven’t thrown an NFL pass in four years, all to avoid having Kaepernick on their team.

So that name is a no.  So who is still out there besides Kaepernick?

The usual suspects, including a truly terrifying thought

Shaun Hill. Austin Davis is pretty familiar with this guy, as they split the 2014 Rams season as starters. Each man piloted his team to a 3-5 record. I’d rather have Davis.

Christian Ponder. Really, he’s still in the league. He’s bounced around a lot since the Vikings bid him farewell after 2014, from the Raiders to the Broncos to the 49ers. Considering the quarterback situation in Denver and San Francisco the past two seasons, you have to think he isn’t showing much on the practice field.

Charlie Whitehurst. My favorite for the role. Well, kinda. I mean, he’s Clipboard Jesus! Plus he’d be coming home. Come on.. you know you love Clipboard Jesus.

Johnny Manziel. Nope. And that’s a hard nope.

Robert Griffin III. Since the Seahawks didn’t look at him at all in 2017, I see no reason they’d look at him in 2018. It’s a shame how his career has turned out, as this guy was electrifying.

So other than my possibly tongue-in-cheek hard sell of Mr. Whitehurst, I think it’s quite likely the Seahawks will bring Austin Davis back. Although now that I think about it, Jay Cutler is available… and man, does that thought ever terrify me.
