Trading Earl Thomas

The Seahawks moved on from Richard Sherman and Michael Bennett. Partly, those two players were injured more in the last couple of years than before. But they also were outspoken players.

Thomas has also been one to be hurt the last two years than before. But unlike Sherman and Bennett, Thomas is relatively soft-spoken when it comes to off-the field issues. Does he still say and do crazy stuff from time to time? Yes. Like going into the Dallas Cowboys locker room after the Dallas-Seattle game last year.

But we forgive Thomas because he is a great player and incredibly important to Seattle. And frankly, Seattle would be stupid to trade the free safety.

Is Thomas getting older? Yes. Is he still a really good player? Of course. Argue if you want that he isn’t the same quality of player as he was in 2015 and before. Maybe he isn’t. Or maybe the talent around him has diminished due to injury. But Thomas is a future Hall of Fame player and there isn’t a replacement for him. Not in the draft and not in free agency.

Thomas would make a team attempting to get younger better. He would make an aging team better as well. And without Thomas the Seahawks will be rebuilding.

Whether they get a first round pick for him or a first and fifth round pick, Thomas is not worth trading. Seattle simply will not ever find a player as good as he is. And that is probably the thinking. The Rams can give up a first round pick for receiver Brandin Cooks. There is no way Cooks impacts a team the way Thomas can.

But will a team risk trading for Thomas who has shown to be more injury prone? And should the Seahawks take the bait?
