Drafting a running back with the Seahawks first pick in the 2018 draft

Please, Seattle. Do not choose a running back first in 2018. Seattle does not yet know if Chris Carson can be a durable every down back in the NFL. In a short stint in 2017, Carson was relatively great. No other Seattle back could do what he did the rest of the season. Literally. Carson led the running backs in yards-per-carry at 4.2.

Mike Davis did not do that poorly either in limited time.

The problem with Seattle’s running backs were that they chose poorly at the beginning of the year as far as roster. Davis was on the practice squad. Eddie Lacy was on the active roster. Horrible moves.

Seattle seems to have improved its offensive line enough where they should be able to run the ball better in 2018. If Carson stays healthy, he should be productive. And Davis backing him up should form a solid duo. Carson may not be Marshawn Lynch. But then he also could be. It is too early to tell.

What Seattle really needs with their first pick is a pass rusher. After losing Bennett and, most likely, Cliff Avril, the Seahawks are down two proven sack guys. Seattle taking Marcus Davenport out of USTA – a defensive end – seems sensible and worthy. Taking Derrius Guice out of LSU – a running back – seems less so.

Davenport has huge upside at a position of need for the Seahawks. Guice may be great, but Seattle doesn’t need him as much with Carson just beginning his career.

Coach Pete Carroll loves pass rushers. Seattle needs this kind of player. The Seahawks will hopefully pick a Davenport over a Guice first in the 2018 NFL Draft.
