According to one site, the Seahawks made a great unrestricted free agent signing since the NFL draft was over: Poona Ford. The defensive tackle may be shorter than NFL teams hope for a defensive tackle, but the Seahawks may have found themselves a long-term productive player.

Poona Ford is a member of the Seattle Seahawks. Doesn’t exactly resound off the tongue the way Shaquem Griffin coming to Seattle does. Griffin may end up being a great player in Seattle. But so might Ford. According to NDT Scouting, Ford will.

Here’s the big strike against Ford: He stands just 5’11” tall. But he is a beast to move in the middle. Ford has man-strength and can be a devil to deal with in the trenches. Plus. Seattle needs interior defensive line help. And they may have just gotten that in Ford.

Ford was the Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year during his senior season at the University of Texas. He takes up energy from the interior of the offensive line, especially when it comes to the run game. Seattle needs defensive line help on the inside. Gone is Sheldon Richardson and Michael Bennett. Even with those two Seattle struggled against the run.

18th highest at the highest level of college football? That is good stuff.

Seattle does need great pass rushers. Pete Carroll wants and needs them for his defense. Ford isn’t one of those. But he will help create breathing room for the edge rushers. And this is really all Seattle can want or ask from a defensive tackle.

Ford could eventually replace one year rentals Tom Johnson and Shamar Stephen. Ideally, Jarran Reed and Nazair Jones will be the Seahawks’ defensive tackles for the foreseeable future.

Ford may not make the roster in 2018. But he should. And he would help Seattle be better.
