Stick with me here, Seahawks fans. I can already hear you groan. A punter? The face of the franchise? What exactly am I thinking? I am not saying I want it to happen. Just that Michael Dickson might make it so.

Every NFL team has a “face” of their franchise. This is the player the team wants to use to sell to their fanbase to buy stuff: Tickets, jerseys, etc. The Seahawks have that player to, of course. And 12s all know that Russell Wilson is that guy.

But what if things go south for Seattle? And they could. The team is in transition and an injury to Wilson could wreck the whole thing. The defense will have a lot of unproven parts, too. So how can Seattle still win games?

Here are four reasons not to overlook Michael Dickson as future face of the franchise. (And seriously, I am joking a bit…but also not really.)

Field position

And who can make sure the field flips and teams are uncomfortable with their starting field position? The punter. And if you haven’t noticed, Michael Dickson is a beast of a punter.

Dickson himself

And the guy has an amazing personality.

And he is Australian. That always means American will like him more because of that. Right, mate?

Of course, this is a punter that left college a year early to turn pro. Clearly, there is no lack of self-confidence. Sort of like Dickson is the anti-Blair Walsh.

Jon Ryan

Jon Ryan has given Seahawks fans a lot to cheer for. He’s been a good punter. But physically, he has never been as good as Dickson. There is no way that Seattle carries two punters into week one of the 2018 season. It would be stupid to have two different punters take up valuable roster spots.

Jon Ryan, I wish you the best truly. You’ve been great. But you will no longer be Seattle’s punter.

Fandom

When was the last time a punter was drafted and people immediately wanted that player’s jersey?

You want a Dickson jersey. I know you do.

Let me be clear: I don’t think that Michael Dickson will be the future face of the Seahawks. But if Seattle gets back to a more run heavy offense, they means field position is of utmost importance. And Seattle’s defense needs to get back to greatness.

And as Tom Herman, Dickson’s last coach at the University of Texas put it this week, Dickson was the best defensive player he had. He might also be Seattle’s soon too.
