Did Seahawks bring in Ryan Grigson for a big reason?
By Lee Vowell
The Seahawks already have a good front office. John Schneider may have just gotten a lot of help with Seattle’s hire of Ryan Grigson, though.
The Seahawks announced the hire of Ryan Grigson on Wednesday. Grigson is a former general manager with the Indianapolis Colts. Under Grigson, the Colts selected Andrew Luck (kind of a no-brainer, really), but also took T.Y. Hilton and Coby Fleener as well.
Grigson, however, did miss on a bunch of selections too. Like Seattle under John Schneider, Grigson didn’t make a priority of taking offensive linemen high in the draft. This lack of focus of increasing the talent that block for Luck is the reason Luck seems to stay injured is open for debate. Or maybe the debate is already closed.
After having three straight years of 11-5 to start Grigson GM career with the Colts, the team was only 8-8 in each of his last two seasons. When Luck is your quarterback, better things are expected.
Grigson got let go by the Colts after 2016 and he spent a year in NFL purgatory, otherwise known as the Cleveland Browns.
What the hire could mean
Seattle has hired Grigson as a consultant. But here is the big reason he may have been hired. This tweet tells more than it appears.
Baker is the agent of Grigson. Baker also just happens to be the agent of several Seahawks as well. His clients include Doug Baldwin and Shaquill and Shaquem Griffin. Seattle is looking to rebuild its roster a bit, but also do it in a cost effective way. Why were Richard Sherman and Michael Bennett let go? Partly money.

Seattle might see the hire of Grigson partly as a way of building report with players through Baker. Grigson has been criticized for not having great interpersonal skills in his career. But if he brings Baker with him and Baldwin and others help get other players to Seattle through Baker, the hiring of Grigson is worth it.
