If Seahawks were in World Cup they would most be like…
By Lee Vowell
There are 32 NFL teams and 32 teams in the World Cup. Coincidence? No? Which country do the Seahawks and other teams resemble?
People in Seattle love their soccer. See what the Sounders draw, for instance. But if the Seahawks were a soccer team in the World Cup, which team would they most resemble? Not Panama, of course. And not Brazil. But who?
Before I get into that, though, let me take a guess at who other teams might look like.
The obvious one is the New England Patriots would be Germany. Germany has been a perennial contender and the Patriots have turned into that over that last nearly 20 years. Plus, both teams are fairly machine-like in the way they approach the game. Neither is effervescent, but both are always good. And being good is better.
I think Portugal most resembles the Green Bay Packers. The reason is that each squad has one player who can make them worthy of being a champion. For Portugal, it is Cristiano Ronaldo. For the Packers, that player is, of course, Aaron Rodgers.
The Cleveland Browns are Panama. Clearly if a team makes the World Cup they are not completely awful. And the Browns are still an NFL team. But both teams have to be wondering, “When we play, we know we are going to lose.”
To answer the Seahawks question is a bit difficult. Prior to 2016 I would have said Seattle looks like Brazil. Both teams were a bit flamboyant and easily capable of winning the final of each team’s sport.
Next: Seahawks chances versus Cowboys just got a boost!
But 2018 means a slightly different version of Seattle’s football team. The team will be much younger defensively. There is talent but unproven. Russell Wilson, though, can still find a way to win games unexpectedly sometimes. The team most like the Seahawks in the 2018 World Cup is Colombia with James Rodriquez as the striker and a young defense.
