It may only be the first preseason game, but Rasheem Green showed the Seahawks he can get to the quarterback. Thank goodness.

The Seahawks are going to be thin at defensive end this season. Seattle has to replace talent and experience as Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril both left this offseason. Frank Clark is expected to start on one side, but the other end spot is still open. Rasheem Green may have changed that on Thursday, though.

Green had 1.5 sacks and four tackles against the Indianapolis Colts in Seattle’s first preseason game of 2018. And one of those sacks was not against Colts trying to make the team. On Indianapolis’s second drive of the game, Green was able to take down Andrew Luck.

After the game coach Pete Carroll said Green has been “really active…and the savvy he brought that showed up in practice, I’m glad it showed up in the game.” And while Green’s sacks were great, those four tackles stand out too. Defensive ends getting tackles means the player is understanding the scheme and has some speed.

It would be one thing, of course, if Green had come into the game in the second quarter and sacked a Colts backup. But starter on starter, Green played well enough to earn to show he is capable of being given a chance to start when the games really matter. Especially now that it seems Dion Jordan will be out for an extended time.

Green may have had more talent than a third-round draft pick anyway. He was drafted lower due to some possible perceived injury issues. But the Seahawks may have gotten lucky and got a first-round talent in Green. There is still a lot of preseason to go, but on Thursday Rasheem Green played like an end who could start in Seattle for years.
