Seahawks final injury report for week one vs. Broncos
By Lee Vowell
The Seahawks play the Broncos on Sunday and health is already an issue for Seattle. Here’s who’s in or out week one.
The Seahawks in 2018 will start with a lack of proven depth compared to previous years. This means health for the starters is even more important. If Seattle were to lose two or three key starts, the season could go south quickly.
Unfortunately, Seattle is dealing with some injury issues already. Here is who is in and who is out for the Seahawks against the Broncos.
Who’s out
Linebacker K.J. Wright had his knee scoped a few weeks ago and will miss at least week one. In his place will be rookie Shaquem Griffin. Griffin has been fantastic in preseason, but there is no way of knowing if that will translate into real games. 12s know that Wright is a very good player and will be missed.
Offseason acquisition and guard D.J. Fluker will also not play on Sunday. Fluker is out with a hamstring issue. J.R. Sweezy will take Fluker’s spot. Sweezy has been dealing with injuries himself over the last couple of seasons, though. He missed all of preseason play with a high ankle sprain.
Sweezy played with Seattle previously from 2012-2015 before leaving for Tampa Bay. The unfortunate part for the Seahawks, though, is that while they are familiar with Sweezy, Sweezy may not be that familiar with new offensive line coach Mike Solari’s system yet.
Iffy
Another offseason acquisition, cornerback Dontae Johnson, also might not play on Sunday. Johnson was expected to start with Byron Maxwell being placed on IR. Johnson’s groin issue is forcing Seattle to be really thin at corner if Johnson can’t go.
Tre Flowers would most likely start in place of Johnson. Flowers is an unproven rookie. And the Seahawks will be really young at cornerback.
Who’s in!
Doug Baldwin will return to the Seahawks after missing the entire preseason with a knee problem. Baldwin’s return means more option for Russell Wilson. And Wilson will need all the options he has against the pass rush of the Broncos.
Dion Jordan, coach Pete Carroll tells us, will play on Sunday. Jordan has immense physical gifts and showed in limited time in 2017 that he can get to the opposing quarterback. He just needs to stay healthy.
And finally, it is possible that Earl Thomas will go against Denver. Carroll said that announcement will happen on Saturday, though.
