The Seahawks placing cornerback Dontae Johnson on IR means Tre Flowers will become extremely important now and not later.

The Seahawks seem to be losing players for several games far too early in the season. For comparison, the Denver Broncos have no one listed on their injury report for Sunday’s game. Seattle, though, has lost two players to IR at right cornerback alone.

First, Byron Maxwell was presumed to be the starter after Richard Sherman was released prior to the NFL Draft. Then Maxwell got hurt and was placed on IR. He has since worked out a buyout and is a free agent.

Second, Johnson, based on his previous NFL experience with the San Francisco 49ers, was going to start week one but then he had a groin issue. He has been placed on IR and will not be eligible to come off it until after week 8.

And we can just get over the fact that if Seattle had let Sherman play out the final year of his contract he would still be on the roster. Sherman and the Seahawks needed to part ways. Both will be better off.

So right corner has just become Tre Flowers‘ for as long as he wants it and plays well enough to keep it. Hopefully this will start week one against the Denver Broncos. But unfortunately 12s do not know how well Flowers will play.

And neither do the Seahawks really. They hope the converted safety will turn into the next great Seattle corner, but he simply hasn’t had enough time to prove that. Flowers will probably get better as the season goes on, but he needs to be very good right away. If he isn’t the Seahawks are in for a bad year.
