According to people more reputable than I am, the Seahawks are signing a players that is going to jail soon. Talk about your temporary fixes…

There was once a time when I think I knew what the Seahawks were trying to do. Then Seattle let Richard Sherman go while still under contract. And traded Michael Bennett, again while he was under contract. But this reported signing of Mychal Kendricks is beyond me.

I don’t know Mr. Kendricks and the fact that he appears to be going to jail sometime soon does not mean he is the worst person ever. He certainly hasn’t killed anyone. He simply made some money an illegal way. We all want money. He just did it while making a bad and immoral decision. Not allegedly; he pled guilty to the crime.

And his impending signing really means that Seattle not only lost faith in rookie Shaquem Griffin, they did so amazingly fast. That great story about how the one-handed linebacker was taken in the NFL draft at all and then was starting in his first real NFL game, that’s gone. Way gone.

In place of that warm and fuzzy story comes Kendricks. But here is my thinking. Seattle hasn’t totally lost faith in Griffin. They just don’t think the rookie is ready. Yet. And the real starter is K.J. Wright. So maybe what Kendricks signing really means is that the Seahawks think Wright will be out for several more weeks.

Next. 5 questions about the Seahawks next opponent, the Bears. dark

Kendricks will be gone after this season. 12s won’t have to worry about him beyond that. But what really makes me feel sad is that the Seahawks have made a business decision to sign him in the first place. The team that kept Kam Chancellor on the payroll and guaranteed his salary even though they pretty much knew he wouldn’t be active in 2018 just because that was the right thing to humanly do? General manager John Schneider and Seattle management should know better than to sign Kendricks. And Schneider needs to do better than this.
