Seahawks offense grades vs. Rams: Chris Carson excellent in loss
By Lee Vowell
The Seahawks offense played well enough to win on Sunday in a loss to the Rams. How well? Here are the grades.
The Seahawks scored 31 points against a good Rams defense on Sunday. This should have been good to win. It wasn’t. But that Seattle lost is not the offenses’s fault. And that is part of the sadness of the game.
Seattle proved that it can run the ball against almost anyone if the team decides to run. Now one could rightfully wish for a do-over for the first two games of the year. Of course, Seattle didn’t have D.J. Fluker yet and he has made a huge difference. Except for his late hold on Sunday…
Here are the grades for Seattle’s offense against Los Angeles.
Quarterback
Russell Wilson was sacked just twice and did not have a rushing attempt against the Rams. This was the first time Wilson did not have a rushing attempt simply he was born, most likely. So what Wilson did was all through the air and he was very good. Wilson focused on getting the ball to Tyler Lockett and Davis Moore and that mostly worked.
Plus, Wilson had this bit of magic.
And this…
Grade: A
Running backs
Simply put, the Seattle backs had a great day. Forget whatever happened with Rashaad Penny. He was a healthy scratch. But he wasn’t needed. Chris Carson looks like the strong back that the Seahawks have wanted for the last several seasons. Carson had 116 yards on 19 carries.
Mike Davis was also fantastic, though. Davis had 68 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown. That the Seahawks’ backs were this successful against a good Rams defense should bode well for the rest of the season.
Grade: A
Receivers
This was an odd group. Tyler Lockett and David Moore were fantastic, combing for six catches for 136 yards and three touchdowns. Doug Baldwin, though, was targeted just once and had one catch for one yard. No other wideout had a catch. Tight end Nick Vannett had the nifty catch and run above from Wilson but wasn’t effective otherwise as a receiver.
Grade: B-
Offensive line
Until Fluker had the hold that put Seattle out of field goal range on their final drive, he was excellent. But that hold was a killer. J.R. Sweezy had a bad miss on Aaron Donald which led to a sack of Wilson. Still, this is Donald and he is great. Sweezy did a decent job otherwise.
The line wasn’t perfect. But the Seahawks did score 31 points and ran for 5.9 yards on 32 carries against a good defense.
Grade: B
