Pete Carroll loved his early Christmas gift from Mike McCarthy
Pete should get Mike something special
To set the stage, Seattle had been pretty miserable on offense most of the night. Okay, Russell Wilson was the one who stunk it up most of the game; everyone else on offense was pretty solid throughout. Here are the Seahawks drives beginning with 3:44 left in the third quarter. 13 plays, 6:30, 72 yards, field goal. Seven plays, 3:15, 75 yards, touchdown.
How could McCarthy have the slightest reason to think his defense would stop the Seahawks? Wilson was finally on fire. Even if the Pack was able to hold Seattle to a field goal, how much time would his team have then? How many times had McCarthy seen his quarterback pull off the near impossible? Yet he didn’t like his chances to pick up two yards.
It was a terrible call by McCarthy. With the game on the line, he took the ball out of the hands of one of the NFL’s greatest players of all time, and depended on his defense to stop a team that had run them over all night. And suddenly, the Packers were going to stop Seattle. Riiiight.
No wonder Pete Carroll said he was “a little relieved” when the Packers elected to lose – I mean, punt. The Seahawks earned the win, don’t get me wrong. But at the least, McCarthy sure put a pretty bow on it for Seattle. The least Pete could do is get Mike a scarf – or maybe a good resume service. McCarthy may need it.
