Is Russell Wilson any good? Just asking for a friend

Russell Wilson continues to shine this season after a poor start. Oddly, some people aren’t convinced yet that he’s any good.

I think it’s safe to say that Russell Wilson had a pretty good game Sunday against the Panthers. For more details you can read Lee Vowell’s grades of the Seahawks offense. You’ll get the point from the subtitle, “All hail, Russell Wilson!” Number 3 played one of his best games of the year to keep Seattle in the playoff hunt. Yet some people say he’s overrated.

Wilson set a couple of important records in the win. He now has the most regular season wins of any Seahawks quarterback, with 71. It’s scary, in a fun way, to think of how far he can push that record, isn’t it? He’s just in his seventh season and wants to play until he’s in his ’40’s. Let’s see; that’s 10 wins per season for 20 years, and that’s just silly to even think about. Then again, the ageless Tom Brady has 204 and isn’t nearly done. So who knows?

Wilson made his mark another way Sunday. His passer rating of 128.3 was enough to push his season rating to 112.0, the highest of his career. Yes, even better than his sublime 2015 campaign, with 34 touchdowns, just 8 interceptions and over 4,000 yards passing. A new singles season high is pretty great.

Russell Wilson is pretty good after all

What’s better is that Wilson pushed his career passer rating over 100. There’s only one football god with a career rating over the century mark, and that’s Aaron Rodgers. The Packers quarterback is still getting it done on one knee and a coach that makes, let’s say, questionable decisions.

Wilson has come under quite a bit of fire this season. I have to say it was for good reason, too. He was holding on to the ball too long, and still does that on occasion. He’s had two pick sixes this year, which is incredible when you realize he’d only thrown one before this season. He’s made some really odd decisions, such as making a forward lateral and catching a tipped ball to take big losses in both cases.

And yet, here we are. No, Wilson hasn’t been perfect this season, far from it. What he’s been is incredibly resilient and resourceful. He’s certainly getting better as the season has progressed. I’m not sure if he’s really Mr. Unlimited, but I do know the Seahawks are very glad to have him on the field.
