Seahawks vs. Vikings will come down to Russell Wilson’s greatness

In previous seasons, the Seahawks have had no choice but to rely on Russell Wilson. Not so in 2018 except for this week versus the Vikings.

In the two-and-a-half seasons before 2018, the Seahawks needed quarterback Russell Wilson to be great nearly every game to win. In 2018, while Wilson still needed to be very good, Seattle has found a running game again and this has created more diversity for Seattle’s offense.

On Monday Night Football, though, the running game will probably not be very good. Not only are the Vikings really good against the run, but Seattle will be missing large human D.J. Fluker. Chris Carson will still get some yards and Brian Schottenheimer will surely try to force the run. But this game will be determined by the play of Wilson.

The good thing about this year is that Wilson has gotten better as the year has gone on. In the last four games Wilson has thrown for 11 touchdowns and no picks. I am not expecting Wilson to throw for 400 yards and three touchdowns on Monday night. If he can throw for 250 yards and two touchdowns and no interceptions, that might be enough.

But have no mistake that Wilson’s yards will not be beautiful. For Seattle to win, this game will be ugly. The Vikings defense was built to mirror the great Seahawk defenses of 2011-2014. Minnesota has a good defensive line and good safety play. Sound familiar to 12s? It should.

And who did Seattle lose to when they did lose in 2013 and 2014? They lost to good quarterbacks, like Tom Brady. Good quarterbacks can change the quality of a team and propel their teams to wins in games they shouldn’t really win. Russell Wilson needs to do this on Monday night.

The Vikings aren’t clearly the best team on the field against Seattle. But they have better individual pieces. But there will be no individual piece on the field better than Russell Wilson when Seattle plays Minnesota. Wilson needs to win the game for the Seahawks and propel his team one step further towards the playoffs.
