Seahawks may already have their best right tackle on the team

George Fant could still be running with that ball for the Seahawks if he hadn't tripped

Seahawks already have two excellent candidates to step in

One thing to remember – okay, actually three – is the Seahawks may already have the answer on the team. For one, Ifedi did improve, markedly so after the first two disastrous games. So he may take another leap forward, much as Jarran Reed improved from an adequate defensive tackle in his first two seasons into a dangerous force of mayhem.

Second, George Fant easily outplayed Ifedi as a part-time player. I’m not going to go overboard with this comparison, as Fant was typically a sixth lineman, and played about 38 percent as many snaps as Ifedi. However, he did grade out well. And of course, he made The Catch. One important thing to remember is this: technically Fant isn’t on the team as he’s a free agent.

The good news is, he’s a restricted free agent. As such, Seattle has a good shot at keeping him at a reasonable price, as long as no other team goes crazy and offers him a huge contract. Here’s a great in-depth look at the possibilities for Fant from John P. Gilbert of fieldgulls.com. Hopefully, every other GM will remember Fant’s struggles as a rookie, and forget he was playing left tackle in the NFL with one year of college experience at the position.

The third in-house possibility for Seattle is a name we haven’t mentioned for several months. That would be 2018 fifth-round pick Jamarco Jones. Jones appears to be fully recovered from the ankle injury that ended his rookie campaign in the pre-season. You may have forgotten, but Pete Carroll put Jones into the starting line-up in place of Ifedi, after the veteran committed back-to-back penalties in a scrimmage. Jones looked excellent in camp last year,  which was no surprise based on his college play.

Next. Important dates for the Seahawks offseason. dark

The Seahawks could certainly look at some free agents to compete at tackle. I expect them to address their depth in the upcoming draft as well. At the very least, expect Jones and Fant to push Ifedi to a new level. Either that, or the bench.
