The Seahawks found their punter for the foreseeable future in last year’s draft. In 2019, the team needs to find a fix for kicker as well.

The Seahawks have higher priorities than kicker this offseason, like getting more pass rushers. But finding a kicker is still something Seattle must do. The team needs to find a player who can be productive long-term and not just a one year rental.

In 2017, Seattle signed Blair Walsh and he was just good enough to keep the team from making the playoffs. Sebastian Janikowski was decent in 2018, but he isn’t young anymore and physically appeared to be breaking down by the end of the season. He shouldn’t be retained.

Free agents that could help the Seahawks

Jason Myers

This one is a bit frustrating because Seattle had Myers in camp last offseason and let him go. And why wouldn’t they have? Myers had never proven himself to be a great kicker in the NFL, but he was pretty close to that in 2018 with the Jets. He was 33 for 36 on field goals, including six for seven beyond 50 yards. Seattle should reach out to Myers about a long-term deal because the 27 year-old kicker should be pretty good for a long time.

Kai Forbath

I am surprised a team hasn’t signed Forbath already. Maybe it is that he doesn’t have the strongest leg but he is extremely accurate. Forbath was released by the Jaguars after kicking in just three games in 2018. He makes a kick 85.7 percent of the time he tries in his career, though, and that is better than most anyone else who has ever kicked in the NFL.

Kickers Seattle can possibly get in the draft

The Seahawks spent a fifth round pick to get Michael Dickson last year. Part of the issue this year, however, is that Seattle currently only has four picks (that will change, of course). Using a pick on a kicker would not be smart. Still, John Schneider will pick up extra picks somehow and one of those could go towards picking a kicker.

John Baron II, San Diego State

Baron made all five of his kicks beyond 50 yards last year in college. He was 17 of 22 overall. Plus, Baron has gotten better at longer distance as he has gotten older. That’s a good sign.

Matt Gay, Utah

Gay got a lot of chances to kick field goals his last two years in college. In 2018, Gay was 26 of 31 with a long of 55 yards. He was even better his junior year going 30 for 34 with three kicks beyond 50 yards. He’s worth a draft pick.
