Toni Harris is special and she wants to make the Seahawks better

Toni Harris made college football history this week. But now she wants to make NFL history by playing for the Seahawks.
One thing that makes me proud to be a Seahawks fan – heck, a city of Seattle fan – is the team and city are not afraid to be unique. Toni Harris made college football history this week by becoming the first female football player at a skill position to sign a letter of intent. According to a tweet from the NFL, though, she wants to also play in the NFL as a member of the Seahawks.
Harris signed with Central Methodist University after junior college at East Los Angeles College. She is originally from Michigan and played high school football at Redford Union High. She had five scholarship offers after her sophomore year in junior college. Harris is a cornerback by trade.
There shouldn’t be any doubt that Harris can play well. There is no way any person trying to break barriers is able to do so because they have a lot of skill in whatever it is they are trying to do. Harris hasn’t gotten a ton of playing time and didn’t play at all in 2017. In 2018, she recorded three tackles, including one for a 24-yard loss. She played because she had the ability to play.

And the Seahawks aren’t afraid to take chances on players they think will help the team. In the 2018 draft, Seattle chose Shaquem Griffin. Seattle didn’t choose Griffin as a favor to his brother, Shaquill, who was already on the team. They took Shaquem because he can play football at a high level. Maybe Harris could end up as a Seahawk.

There are a few reasons Harris might not ever make the NFL, though. One is that she is a smaller player at five-foot-six and 165 pounds. Her size would hold any player back no matter how good. A second reason is that this is the NFL we are talking about. The league abhors change and has been slow to hire female assistant coaches.
Still, one has to root for Harris, right? She won’t keep fighting for chance to play at a high level of football and maybe with the Seahawks. We should all have such drive and desire to succeed.
