Seattle Seahawks: 15 best free agent acquisitions of all time
By Lee Vowell
The other huge signing that John Schneider and Pete Carroll made prior to the 2013 season besides Cliff Avril was Michael Bennett. Bennett’s signing was more important than Avril’s, though, because Bennett was a more versatile player. He could play as a defensive tackle or a defensive end, as he was great at both.
Bennett created issues for defensive coordinators, as they had to account for him, but were unsure exactly where Bennett would line up. With the secondary as good as it was, Bennett had the freedom to be creative, which put even more stress on opposing offenses. At his best, Bennett could completely disrupt any offensive scheme.
Of course, it must be said that during Bennett’s time in Seattle he was outspoken on several different subjects. He may be almost as well remembered for not standing during the national anthem before games as what he did on the field. But none of this should take away how he good he was as a player.
The simple fact is that if the Seahawks do not sign Bennett as a free agent then their defense would be different and not as good between 2013 and 2016, when Seattle had the best defense in the NFL. Bennett helped Seattle win the franchise’s only Super Bowl. For that reason, he is the best free agent signing the Seahawks have ever had.
