Seattle Seahawks: 15 best free agent acquisitions of all time
By Lee Vowell
Olindo Mare, like Warren Moon, wasn’t in Seattle long. Mare played for Seattle for just three seasons between 2008 and 2010. There are some who might forever hold against Mare that he missed two field goals against the Chicago Bears early in the 2009 season that may have cost Seattle the game. The Seahawks coach at the time in Jim Mora certainly did not like that.
But mostly Mare was very good as a Seahawk. In fact, after missing those early-season kicks against the Bears, Mare did not miss another the rest of the season. The real problem for Mare in Seattle is that he simply didn’t spend more of his career with the team.
Mare played for 16 years in the NFL. 10 of those seasons were with the Miami Dolphins. After leaving Miami, Mare had one awful year with the New Orleans Saints. Seattle took a chance on the kicker, though. The Seahawks signed him originally to a two-year, $3.5 million contract. It was a wise investment.
Mare made 73 of his 83 field goal attempts with Seattle. He never missed any of his 89 extra point attempts. Mare didn’t have the strongest leg and did not often kick from beyond 50 yards, but he still made four of his six attempts from beyond 50 with the Seahawks.
Overall, Mare making 88 percent of his field goals ranks second in franchise history, just behind Stephen Hauschka’s rate of 88.8 percent. Seattle would love to have a kicker as consistent as Mare was for 2019 and beyond.
