Michael Robinson‘s statistics are not going to blow anyone away. If someone looking for raw data were to look at this list of best free agents and saw Robinson’s numbers, they would think I was insane for including Robinson here.

But Robinson’s value to the Seahawks cannot be measured by raw data. Robinson ran the ball a total of 29 times in the four years he played with Seattle. He did not score a rushing touchdown.

Even though he was a fullback, he had more receptions (32) than rushing attempts. Combined, Robinson touched the ball just 61 times in regular season play for Seattle for a total of 397 yards.

And none of those numbers matter. Robinson was an older player on the Seahawks teams of 2010 to 2013 that were beginning to find themselves and believe they could be champions. Of course, the 2013 team did win the Super Bowl. And Robinson was one of the important leaders in the locker room to get the team to believe in itself.

Robinson also helped open holes for Marshawn Lynch. Lynch ran for 1,204 yards or better every full year he played in Seattle where Robinson was his fullback. “Beast Mode” was a great running back, of course, but he was made better by Robinson’s presence.

Robinson is a perfect example of how numbers do not always tell a player’s story. Maybe he scored just three touchdowns in four years with Seattle? But without Robinson, Seattle may not have developed into a champion.
