Seahawks draft preview: What Seattle might do
By Lee Vowell
How important is this years and next years draft knowing Russell Wilson is signed through 2023 and will be 34 then?
Sibert: Right now it’s now or never for Seattle. They need to take advantage of Wilson’s situation and build the best they can around him. Hopefully that starts with this draft but they also have twelve picks in next year’s draft.
Patnode: All drafts are important. This class and next years will be important for re-establishing the depth that made the 2012-2014 teams so special. The stars may be in place already, but finding valuable role players and replacements for aging vets like Duane Brown, Baldwin and K.J. Wright. But for the next two years, depth is important and finding stars are secondary.
Vandenberg: Wilson’s signing certainly puts the team in more of a “win soon” mode, if not exactly win now. He’s been exceptionally durable, so I don’t see 34 as the end of the the line for him at all. Nevertheless, the Seahawks should be building for now.
Vowell: If this question had been asked before the Frank Clark trade I would have said that Seattle isn’t building for the future so much but needs to draft quality depth. Now it seems that Seattle is focused on getting as much as they can from this year’s draft with a limited number of picks (currently) and adding a lot next year. The Seahawks are good enough to make it to the playoffs now but I think they are aiming for the Super Bowl in 2022 and 2023 if these next two drafts go well. If they don’t, Seattle is in big trouble long-term.
