The Seahawks took Gary Jennings with their first pick in the fourth round. Will he help Seattle win games in 2019 and beyond?

The Seahawks need wide receiver depth. Gary Jennings is not the flashiest of players and won’t take the top off defenses the way D.K. Metcalf could, but Jennings might become a trusted receiver for Russell Wilson. Wilson likes guys he knows will catch the ball no matter the situation.

Think of Jennings as a lot more like Jermaine Kearse than Doug Baldwin. During Kearse’s time in Seattle he developed into a receiver that Wilson thought he could throw to at any point. Even in the NFC Championship game against the Packers in 2015, and even though Kearse had bungled two passes that turned into interceptions, Wilson threw towards Kearse. Jennings is this kind of receiver. Wilson will be comfortable with him.

One reason for this is Jennings went to the same high school that Wilson did and Jennings knows Wilson’s sister. This is the NFL we live in today. Who does your quarterback feel comfortable with? It seems trivial but it is important. Wilson was always best when he thought the guy he was throwing to was someone he could trust, almost as much personally as professionally.

Jennings may not make a lot of Pro Bowls. Or who knows? Maybe he could. One never knows truly how an NFL player will develop. Jennings may not be the fastest guy in this draft but he doesn’t drop passes and Seattle needs someone who will catch the ball on possession routes. If you’re looking for a guy that can do that, Gary Jennings is your man.

dark. Next. How did the NFC West do on day 2 of the NFL Draft?

Jennings won’t get the highest grade in the Seahawks draft. He isn’t supposed to. But he still might be a very valuable Seahawk. If he can make the roster in 2019.
