Seahawks signing Ndamukong Suh would be big mistake
By Lee Vowell
The Seahawks still need defensive line help and Ndamukong Suh is still available in free agency. But Seattle should not think about signing Suh.
Defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh‘s free agent market got a bit tougher on Monday when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers released Gerald McCoy. Suh’s talent is theoretically equal to McCoy’s but McCoy doesn’t quit on his team and Suh does. The Seahawks don’t need that.
Seattle needs help to go with Jarran Reed in the middle of the defensive line. If Seattle wants to make a run at another free agent defensive tackle, they should choose to go after McCoy and let Suh sign elsewhere. Seattle is a playoff contender and could go deep in the playoffs. But they need players who will play hard every game to help the team reach its potential. Suh won’t do that.
Suh is a selfish player, even if he is one with tons of talent. If he were motivated every snap of every game he would be a potential Hall of Fame player. But he quit on the Lions for most of his time there and then quit on the Dolphins and played about three solid games with the Rams last year. Suh played with energy in the playoffs because if the Rams won two playoff games he made more money.
Seattle made the decision to lose players like Suh before the 2018 season. The Seahawks traded Michael Bennett and released Richard Sherman. Bennett and Sherman were potentially still very good players when they left Seattle. But they were issues in the locker room. Signing Suh would just create a problem that the Seahawks rid themselves of before last year.
There haven’t been a lot of rumors about Suh ending up in Seattle. But Seattle, even after signing Al Woods, still should find quality defensive tackles to pair with Jarran Reed. The free agent market is drying up a but now, even with McCoy available now, and Suh has the talent to improve a team. But mostly he chooses not to fulfill the potential of his talent. Therefore, he would be a waste of a signing for the Seahawks.
