Grading Seahawks free agent signings so far in 2019
By Lee Vowell
The As
On this list I am not including any of the free agents that the Seahawks chose to re-sign. Those players include K.J. Wright, D.J. Fluker and Mychal Kendricks. All are expected to be solid players or better with Seattle in 2019 but they were all productive in 2018 or before with the Seahawks. Kendricks, for one, could be a game-changer with more time in a Seattle uniform.
There were two players that Seattle signed as free agents from other teams that may make the difference between Seattle making the playoffs in 2019 and not.
Ziggy Ansah
Of course, we wrote a ton about Ziggy Ansah signing in Seattle. He has had two different seasons of 12-plus sacks in his career. When healthy he is every bit as good as Frank Clark who he is basically replacing. But Clark stayed healthy while Ansah has not consistently. In fact, Ansah might miss the first game or four of the 2019 season.
If Ansah can stay healthy, however, he will give Seattle an edge rusher to go along with L.J. Collier and others and Seattle won’t miss Clark at all. Since Ansah has just a one-year deal in Seattle, I think he is extra-motivated and plays great.
Jason Myers
I know there are a lot of people who don’t like to overpay for kickers. But I am not one of them. While it is true to some degree that a kickers successful past cannot predict a successful future, 12s have also seen in the last two years how a kicker’s ineffectiveness can hurt the team badly.
Jason Myers will not only be more consistent than either Sebastian Janikowski or Blair Walsh were for Seattle, he will have a stronger leg and be a weapon from 50 yards or more. Plus, he led the league is percentage of non-returnable kickoffs last season so he will make special teams better in the facet as well. John Schneider wanted to address Seattle’s problem at kicker and he did so. Money well spent.
