Seahawks appear to have no chance for Gerald McCoy
By Lee Vowell
The Seahawks still need defensive line help, especially guys who can pressure opposing quarterbacks. But Gerald McCoy doesn’t seem to be an option now.
I would clearly love for Gerald McCoy to be a member of the Seahawks. He has proven over his career to be excellent at both defending against the run and the pass and Seattle needs a player exactly like that. McCoy was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this week. But Seattle appears likely to be outbid for his talents.
To be honest, this a bit frustrating. Seattle has the money to spend on a player like McCoy but they are not likely to do so. Rightfully, Seahawks general manager John Schneider has a certain way and specific budget he likes to adhere to and he has been greatly successful as Seattle’s GM. Him not immediately signing McCoy is probably a good thing financially.
Still, the Seahawks are just on the verge of being really good and McCoy could push them into next-level territory. Pair McCoy with Seattle’s excellent defensive tackle Jarran Reed and the interior of Seattle’s line is beastly.
McCoy has been tied to other teams that have money to spend, though. And they are either already established teams, like the New England Patriots, or upcoming teams, like the Cleveland Browns. New England may not overpay for McCoy but McCoy might go there because he has a chance to win a championship in 2019. Or McCoy might sign with Cleveland because he has a chance to win a Super Bowl in 2020 or 2021 (as strange as that is to write).
Either way, Seattle is unlikely to give McCoy the money he wants and the Seahawks are not probable to win the Super Bowl this year or next. Those two reasons alone are a good reason McCoy will cross Seattle off his list of potential teams to sign with.
