Seahawks Sunday roundup: OTAs, Bobby Wagner and Gerald McCoy
By Lee Vowell
The Seahawks continue OTAs and Bobby Wagner talks contract. This is some of the Seattle news fit for 12s to read from last week.
I can’t really remember. Is there a Seahawks offseason? It seems we go from end of season to getting ready for the NFL combine to free agency to the NFL draft to OTAs and then training camp and then the following season. There is always Seattle football news to discuss. Here is some of it from last week.
OTAs
What can one really say about how good football players look when they aren’t being tackled or under duress? They look great, of course! The only real news about organized team activities is when a player gets hurt. Thankfully, Seattle hasn’t suffered any serious, long-term setbacks.
Other than injuries, the Seahawks rookie class has looked good and D.K. Metcalf looks amazing. Again, this is all without contact, though. Seattle’s offseason workouts continue for the next few weeks on and off, so hopefully nobody gets hurt.
Bobby Wagner
Wagner, Seattle’s All-Pro linebacker, has chosen to show up for OTAs and not hold out. He did say he is looking to get paid a lot of money when his current contract expires after the 2019 season, though. Wagner will play and be extremely great this season and then Seattle will have a decision. Pay Wagner $15 million or more or not.
Hopefully, John Schneider decides to pony up the money to extend Wagner and keep him as an irreplaceable part of the Seahawks defense. Seeing Wagner play for another team would just be sad.
Gerald McCoy
McCoy was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week. He is still an excellent player and could really help the Seahawks on the interior of their defensive line. Seattle needs help up front on defense. But even though Seattle has money to spend, they are unlikely to sign McCoy.
Likely, Schneider wants to save money to extend Jarran Reed. Reed will be a free agent after this coming season. Schneider may also want to get younger on the defensive line. If so, it is a valid reason. But if not, there is no reason that the Seahawks should at least try to sign McCoy.
