3. Jimmy Garoppolo – San Francisco 49ers

Garoppolo has been in the NFL for five seasons. That seems a bit crazy. Of course, he started off in New England and was never going to get much playing time as a certain quarterback named Tom Brady was playing in front of him. The Patriots did see Garoppolo as the potential future at quarterback for them, though. If Brady had retired a couple of seasons ago, New England would have happily handed the reins to Garoppolo.

But New England could not pass up the 49ers offering a second round pick in the 2018 NFL draft for Garoppolo. Garoppolo was traded halfway through the 2017 season and started five games for San Francisco. Every game that he started, the 49ers won. And this was on a bad team. 49ers fans had reason to hope that Garoppolo would lead the team back to the playoffs.

He still could. But he needs to find a way to stay healthy. Garoppolo played in just three games in 2018 and he actually wasn’t very good when he did play. San Francisco was 1-2 when Garoppolo left for the season with a torn ACL. One thing Garoppolo could do before the injury was be mobile. We will have to see just how mobile he is after he returns in 2019.

No matter what, he has a ton of guaranteed money and will be the quarterback for the 49ers for the next several seasons. He should be good as he has the accuracy and physical ability to be. At least for now, based on his NFL history, he is better than Murray.
