Seahawks have another great weapon in kicker Jason Myers
Turns out Seahawks missed out on a Pro Bowler
So how did Myers do last year? Ah, nothing much; he was just a Pro Bowler, that’s all. He did miss three extra points, but so did Seabass. Myers really shone when kicking field goals. He converted a phenomenal 33 of 36 attempts. That’s 91.7 percent, actually better than his 90.9 percent performance on extra points. Myers hit five of five kicks in a four-point loss to the Titans. He provided 16 of the Jets 22 points. That pales compared to his seven of seven performance against the Colts in a 42-34 Jets win. Adding his three extra points (no misses), Myers accounted for 24 points.
Even better, he made six of his seven attempts over 50 yards. It’s true that two of his three misses came in close games. He missed a 50-yard kick in the third quarter of a six-point loss to the Dolphins. I’d say it’s fair to say Sam Darnold’s three picks on the last four drives cost them that game, though. Myers other “big” miss came in a 44-38 loss to the Packers. He missed a 45-yard kick in the first quarter. But with just 21 seconds to go, he converted a 33-yard field goal to force the game to overtime. Naturally, it was Aaron Rodgers time after that, but Myers did his job.
What’s exciting about Myers is the fact he scored 129 points on a really terrible offense. The Jets ranked 29th in yards gained with just 4,787. The fact they ranked as high as 23rd in points is all due to Myers. His 129 points accounted for 38.7 percent of the Jets scoring. By contrast, Janikowski was responsible for 26.7 percent of the Seahawks scoring. Yes, bad offenses usually have a disproportionate number of points from their kickers, but Myers was something else.
Take the Cardinals last year. My inner Henny Youngman cries out for the punchline, but this is serious stuff. Arizona scored an abysmal 225 points – or about what the Chiefs put up in a half. Okay, so they had to use three kickers – did I really say they were tough? Yeah, somehow they are. Anyway, their three kickers made 12 of 17 field goals and converted 23 of 24 extra points. Those are good performances on extremely limited opportunities. So, that’s 59 points for 26.2 percent of the “scoring”.
The 49ers were just bad on offense, not abysmal. Their 342 points were 21st in the league. Unlike the Cardinals, the Niners had a great kicker in Robbie Gould. He made 33 of 34 field goals and 27 of his 29 extra points. That’s 126 of 342 points for 36.8 percent of San Francisco’s scoring. Gould is one of the great kickers in the NFL, and Myers was right there with him. No, I didn’t run through every team in the league, but of the six others I did check, no one matched Myers’ percentage of scoring.
