The Seahawks need some veteran depth along the defensive line. One way to add quality would be to bring back old friend Ahtyba Rubin.

Ahtyba Rubin had a wasted 2018. The Seahawks had trouble stopping the run last year. Rubin is a free agent. Seattle needs some quality veteran players on the defensive line. One plus one equals Seattle bringing back Ahtyba Rubin.

Rubin spent two years in Seattle from 2015 through 2016. He started every game he played with the team. In 2016, he had 6 tackles for loss. Rubin is realy a run-stopper only so those 6 tackles are really good. Seattle isn’t looking for a superstar at defensive tackle. The team simply needs someone who can make Seattle better than the 4.5 yards-per-rush they gave up in 2018. Rubin can do that.

Sure, Seattle has Jarran Reed as a beast at defensive tackle. Poona Ford is a young player who flashed tons of potential last year. Seattle also signed Al Woods this offseason and brought in veteran Jamie Meder too. But Rubin, if healthy, is better than Meder. A defensive tackle rotation of Reed, Ford, Woods and Rubin would be solid and should help the Seahawks be much better against the run in 2019.

Rubin isn’t going to be an All-Pro. Neither is Woods or Meder. But Woods nor Meder cost very much either. If Rubin can come in at about $1 million or less, he could be a good fit. And he might. Rubin played 12 games in 2017 and then missed all of 2018. In 2018 he missed the season because of a biceps injury.

Having a biceps injury is usually not a career-killer. The fact that Rubin didn’t suffer an injury to a joint, like a knee, means he should be healthy for this coming season. Because of his familiarity with Seattle’s system, he would fit nicely in the Seahawks scheme. Is Rubin worth taking a risk on? Yes.
