The Seahawks have a mock game on Saturday. Ahead of the scrimmage, though, Seattle made some moves to its tight end room.

The Seahawks have their first team scrimmage on Saturday around 1 pm PT. But this is not a day to rest. Seattle made several moves to sign players and release a couple of others. John Schneider and Pete Carroll never rest in an attempt to make the team better.

Seattle signs two tight ends

The Seahawks announced that they had signed Jackson Harris and Wes Saxton on Saturday. (By the way, try saying both those names together as fast as you can five times.) Harris took part in Seattle’s rookie minicamp this year as a tryout player. He clearly made enough of an impression for Seattle to bring him back for training camp and give him a chance to make the active roster or make it to the practice squad.

Harris played college at Georgia and did not do much as a receiver. He had 8 catches in four years. But he has good size at six-foot-six-inches and 250 pounds. Seattle wants to see what he can do as a blocker mostly. Who knows? Maybe he will become the next George Fant and transition from tight end to tackle in the NFL.

Sexton hasn’t played any meaningful snaps since he was in college at South Alabama in 2015. Maybe Seattle sees him as a blocker too?

Seattle releases two tight ends

To make room for Harris and Saxton, Seattle released Tyrone Swoopes and Justin Johnson. Swoopes has battled injuries since he joined the Seahawks a couple of seasons ago. He did have one catch for 23 yards in 2018. Swoopes looked good catching the ball but is limited overall. He has mostly been on Seattle’s practice squad for the last two years.

Johnson suffered the cruelest of NFL fates when he was injured in practice last week. He was a player on the bubble to make the team and working his butt off to get there but suffered an Achilles injury. I wish Johnson the best as it is tough to be that close to your dream job and have an injury derail it. We are all human in the end and should have compassion for others because of it.
