Any Niners fans want to compare QBs with the Seahawks?

In light of Jimmy G’s recent performances, is there still any question that the Seahawks are the team that made the wise investment at quarterback?

I’m sorry, but this is just too funny.  It wasn’t that long ago that a 49ers site ran an article with an unfortunate tagline implying the Seahawks drastically overpaid for Russell Wilson. The article itself did no such thing. But the tagline, “Did Russell Wilson’s contract cripple the Seahawks?”, was just too much. I’ve already addressed just how ludicrous this question is. But in light of Jimmy G’s recent performances…sorry, but as a loyal 12, I just can’t resist.

Even the most rabid Niners fan has to admit that Wilson is the better quarterback of the two. Wilson’s worst season is better than the best of Jimmy Garoppolo. Remember, Jimmy is the guy who got a five-year deal worth $137.5 million. The Niners paid him this based on a woefully slight career record. Jimmy G had completed 183 of 272 passes for 2,062 yards, 12 touchdowns, and five interceptions when he got his windfall.

That isn’t bad, not bad at all. But does that record look like it’s worth the third-biggest contract among all quarterbacks? Here’s another way to look at it. Check this stat line: 176 of 274 passes for 1979 yards, 17 touchdowns, and nine picks. It’s a bit worse overall, but it’s basically the same performance. Those are Ryan Tannehill‘s stats for his final year with the Dolphins. Miami finally came to their senses and cut him after that. San Francisco got basically the same performance and opened up the bank vault.

Now Garoppolo looks completely out of whack. When you get picked off on five straight passes in practice, that’s not a good sign. The third-highest paid quarterback in the league followed that up with a stunningly bad game versus the Broncos last night. Yes, I know it’s just the preseason. But it’s never good to go 1 for 6 for zero yards and an interception, not even at the company picnic.

Remember when we were worried about Geno Smith’s game against those same Broncos in the Seahawks first preseason game? Smith was just 3 for 9 for 58 yards. There’s no way around it; he didn’t have a good night. But for those keeping score at home, that’s two more completions, 58 more yards, and one less interception than Jimmy G. Oh, and $136.6 million less, too.

Next. Russell Wilson on his way to being the Man. dark

Don’t worry; I’m not completely crazy. Of course, Garoppolo is a better quarterback than Smith. But when you compare him to guys like Tannehill, I’m not so sure he’s at the upper echelon of the league. I’m sure of this, though: the Seahawks are getting their money’s worth from Russell Wilson. I don’t see how Garoppolo is worth anything close to that.
