Quick takeaways from Seahawks win in preseason game 3
By Lee Vowell
The Seahawks won their preseason game against the Chargers on Saturday. Here are a few things we learned in Seattle’s victory.
Seattle played their most meaningful game in a stretch of meaningless ones as the Seahawks’ preseason comes to an end next week. We got to see Russell Wilson and a lot of the number one offense play into the second quarter. They were solid. But other things weren’t. Here are a few things we learned from Saturday’s game.
John Ursua needs to make the team
Maybe Ursua is a 74 year-old rookie (OK, he is an old 25) who did not play against a lot of great competition in college. But there should be little doubt that Ursua can play football on an NFL level. He moves like Doug Baldwin and is a smart route runner. Maybe he has mostly gone up against scrubs on defense, but he has proved he should be on the Seahawks roster in 2019.
The defense is what we thought it was
Seattle’s defense is going to be very good and struggle. Wait, what? Basically, Seattle is going to get thrown at a bunch and Seattle doesn’t seem to be good at stopping it. So far, the Seahawks have little pass rush. Ziggy Ansah coming back might not help that much because Seattle will also lose Jarran Reed for six weeks with suspension.
On a positive side, Seattle made every effort on the interior of the defensive line to get better at stopping the run and it seems to be successful. Especially on a first half Chargers rushing attempt on 4th and one when Seattle got the stuff.
Geno Smith is going to be Russell Wilson’s backup this year
Paxton Lynch had one good preseason game and then a bad one. Then in the second preseason game he was injured and had to miss preseason game three. Smith missed preseason game two after having surgery for a cyst on his knee. Lynch’s bad game was good for Smith even when Smith couldn’t play.
Against the Chargers, Smith was decent and that is all he needs to be. Lynch will be cut and Smith will make the team.
