The Seahawks played the Chargers in Seattle’s third preseason game of 2019. Here are three players who might have made or lost their roster spot on Saturday.

Honestly, it was difficult to take a lot away from the vanilla-ness of what the Seahawks and Chargers were trying to do in the first half of Saturday’s game. Russell Wilson played a lot of the first half and looked fine. What the offense does in preseason and what it does in the regular season are two different things.

Backup players are battling for roster spots, though. It used to be that the 53-man Seattle roster was pretty much assumed. Not so much now. Seattle is still good but does not have the depth of some previous seasons. Key players will be found in the lower realms of the team.

Besides the backups, I should note that Chris Carson still looks a lot better than Rashaad Penny. Tyler Lockett was a lot better than any other receiver. And the Seattle special teams was really good, save for one bad Michael Dickson punt. Teams don’t win games with just a few important players, though. Those guys need help.

Overall, Seattle’s second and third teams looked pretty good against the Charger’s backups. Los Angeles was playing at home and appeared to not want to get injured more than win but that is how it should be for starts in preseason. What really matters for Seattle is the receiving group and defensive linemen who might need to play important roles this year.

Did any Seattle backups stand out – or not – in Saturday’s game and stamp their name on the roster for this year? Here are some thoughts.
