Seahawks 2019 roster projection before preseason game 4
By Lee Vowell
Linebackers
Starters: Bobby Wagner, K.J. Wright and Mychal Kendricks
Depth: Austin Calitro and Cody Barton
Cuts: Shaquem Griffin, Ben Burr-Kirven, Justin Currie, Jawuan Johnson and Juwon Young
And…breathe. For all the weakensses of the Seahawks current defense, linebacker is not one of them. In fact, Seattle almost has too many talented linebackers because they are going to have cut a few.
I am doing a weird thing here. Normally, and practically, I would have only two starting linebackers and five defensive backs as most teams play more snaps with three receivers than two. But Seattle is going to find a way to get Wagner, Wright and Kendricks on the field at the same time a lot.
Kendricks might actually have been Seattle best defensive player in preseason. Pete Carroll doesn’t think Kendricks will go to jail for insider trading. Kendricks is being sentenced in late September. If Kendricks is able to play this year, Seattle will have the best linebacker group in the league.
The tough part is going with who Seattle keeps. I am going with only five linebackers here because of the talent of this group. Sadly, Griffin hasn’t been productive in his time in Seattle and now he is injured. There is just too much talent on the unit he plays to keep him over someone else.
The same goes with Burr-Kirven. He might be a good special teams player but Seattle has several of them now. He is expendable.
