Seahawks coaching and special teams grades versus Cardinals
By Lee Vowell
The Seahawks won in fairly easy fashion in week four as far as Seattle standards go. Here are the grades for the special teams and coaching.
The Seahawks are now 3-1 in 2019. Two of the wins were not so much fun as Seattle beat a still-winless Bengals team by a point and a one-win Steelers team by two points. Then Seattle stunk it up against the Saints. But on Sunday, Seattle had by their standards a breather as they won 27-10.
How did Seattle’s supposedly vaunted special teams and coaching staff do against Arizona? In a word, better.
Kicker
Jason Myers made not only his first field goal of the season, he followed that up making his second. This isn’t really a judgment on Myers as Seattle had had Myers just try one really long field goal before week four. Myers was paid a lot to come to Seattle and he will be a useful weapon this year.
Grade: A
Punter
After a bad week three, Michael Dickson was much better against the Cardinals. Dickson punted four times against Arizona. While his average yards per punt wasn’t crazy good, it didn’t need to be. Of the four punts Dickson had, three went inside the Arizona 20. He averaged 45.5 yards per punt but his net was 44. That is good stuff.
Grade: A
Return game
Let’s forget what Tyler Lockett did or didn’t do returning kicks and punts for the Seahawks in week four. He had just one kick return for 21 yards and on punts averaged -1.5 yards on two returns. The good thing here is that Myers allowed no kickoff returns for the Cardinals and Arizona had just one punt return for one yard.
Grade: B
Coaching
After a week against the Saints when Seattle’s coaching staff appeared to be new to the sport of football, Seattle was much better in week four. Gone were the stupid time management issues. The offensive game plan worked well enough by using Russell Wilson earlier rather than later. And Ken Norton Jr. gave enough out of his defense to contain rookie Kyler Murray.
Grade: B+
