Will Dissly loss from Achilles injury overshadows Seahawks win
It’s always good when the Seahawks win. This game is being overshadowed by the loss of tight end Will Dissly for the second straight year.
Seattle won today in a tough road game in Cleveland, but the joy is tempered by bad news. The Seahawks excellent tight end Will Dissly injured his Achilles tendon. The early news is that he’s likely out for the season for the second straight year. Dissly fell to the turf without contact, as we’ve seen too often. It’s hard to overstate how big a loss this is for the Hawks.
Coming into today’s contest, Dissly ranked second on the team with 23 receptions. He was second in catch rate among players with at least 10 targets, bringing in 88.5 percent of his targets. Dissly even led the team in touchdown catches with four. In fact, he led the NFL in touchdown catches among tight ends.
Uncle Will was well on the way to fulfilling the promise he showed in his rookie season. In fact, he had actually stepped his game up from last year, showing no effects from his torn patellar tendon. The excellent site Pro Football Focus ranks Dissly sixth among tight ends, and third for receiving. That’s not too shabby for a guy who was supposed to be a blocking specialist. He’s rated at 81.1 points for 2019, up from 71.4 in 2018.
Pete Carroll had nothing but high praise for Dissly after the game. The great Seattle Times reporter Bob Condotta tweeted this portion of Carroll’s post-game presser. There doesn’t appear to be much room for hope this season, as Carroll called this is a devastating injury:
I agree with Lee Vowell in his earlier assessment of the second-year tight end. Will Dissly was well on the way to becoming the Seahawks best tight end ever. Game after game, he’s been a critical safety valve for Russell Wilson. More than that, he’s been an ultra-reliable target for the Seahawks and a nightmare matchup for opposing defenses. The moves that brought Luke Willson back to Seattle loom even larger now. We’ll see if the Hawks try to make another move before the trade deadline. Along with every other 12, we send our best wishes to Uncle Will.
