The Seahawks should look to trade for OJ Howard
By Geoff Shull
Seahawks coach Pete Carroll was recently asked about the tight end situation in Seattle. His answer, Seattle is “working on stuff.” Maybe this?
Seahawks tight end Will Dissly is likely out for the season with a serious injury after two back to back campaigns filled with promise. It may be time to look for another high upside player to plug into the tight end position.
With the Rams trading for Jalen Ramsey and the 49ers having a top 5 defense thus far, the Seahawks would be wise to look for another reliable pass catcher to fill Dissly’s role in the offense. There were a handful of tight ends I considered here, namely Delanie Walker, Tyler Eifert, and Vernon Davis. Eifert has been injured the majority of his career, although the production is there when on the field. Vernon Davis has been consistent throughout his career and if nothing else, he blocks well and can catch the ball when called upon. However, he is firmly entering the twilight of his career and it would be a trade for a stop gate player.
Walker was the most difficult one for me to eliminate. Just two seasons ago Walker was top 10 in run blocking, pass blocking, catching and route running for tight ends. The only other TE to do so was Gronk. It really came down to whether the Seahawks are looking for a plug for the current year, or if they are looking for a long-term solution. The deciding factor would be if they still believe Dissly is their man going forward, or if they have some hesitancy after back to back season ending injuries. Given the serious nature of Dissly’s injuries I chose to go with upside.
